Instrumentation and Devices

Taitech has several research and development programs on specialized instrumentation for use in propulsion research and in on-line propulsion systems. A flameholder device that will control flame stability in practical combustion devices is currently under investigation. The device uses a modulated secondary fuel injector with a voice coil actuator; preliminary data show that fuel allocation alone can reduce the magnitude of fluctuation due to combustion instability by 50-90%, depending on the site of the secondary injection.

An optically interrogated micromachined pressure sensor has been developed at Taitech for propulsion system applications, and the device has provided accurate, repeatable results over the design range. Arrays of these sensors will provide small, rugged devices with high frequency response.

In another Taitech instrumentation development program, a light-activated insulated gated bipolar transistor (IGBT) has been designed. The device is scheduled to be used for actuator system control for the advanced vehicle management program slated for demonstration in 2001.

For use in a laboratory or manufacturing environment, Taitech has designed and developed a dry-powder delivery system that may be used as a self-contained wind tunnel seeder. This device may also be used for abrasive etching, drilling, cutting, and other applications requiring powder entrained in a gas medium.
